EPREL

Registration in the EPREL system.

2019 is not only about mandatory LUCID registration for sellers introducing goods to German territory.

Another obligation concerns manufacturers and importers of electronics and home appliances, covering the entire European Union.

Manufacturers and importers introducing devices to the European Union market for the first time must register them in the EPREL database (European Registry for Energy Labelling, European Registry for Energy Labelling).

The obligation applies not only to Amazon and eBay sellers who are also manufacturers or distributors, but to everyone who introduces devices to the EU territory for the first time, not just on e-commerce channels.

It can be expected that EPREL registration status will be most thoroughly controlled in Germany, so sellers on Amazon and eBay marketplaces must pay special attention to deadlines and complete all formalities related to EPREL.

The registration obligation applies to devices that were introduced to the market or manufactured after August 1, 2017. However, devices introduced to the market from the beginning of 2019 must be registered immediately, and devices introduced to the market between August 1, 2017, and January 1, 2019 must be registered by June 30, 2019. Products introduced to the market before August 1, 2017 are not subject to registration requirements. So if your offer includes devices introduced to the market before August 1, 2017, you have no obligation to register in EPREL, but you can register voluntarily.

You don’t need to register in each country where the product is sold/introduced to the market, but it’s done globally for the entire European Union.

The registration itself is free. Unlike with VerpackG/LUCID, you don’t need to purchase any license.
