LUCID registration has been a popular topic in recent weeks among online sellers shipping goods to Germany.
Registration is mandatory by the end of this year for companies that introduce product packaging to Germany.
This means that sellers on Amazon and eBay, among others, have this obligation.
If you’re wondering how to register for LUCID and how to purchase a license, I invite you to familiarize yourself with the basic information about the registration process for this system.
1. You need to register with the LUCID system (Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister) in Germany, from which you receive a registration number.
Registration takes 15-30 minutes and can be done at this link:
https://lucid.verpackungsregister.org/Hersteller/Registrierung/Teil-1
For registration, you need to prepare:
- Tax ID, Business ID, company registration number if the company has one, etc.
- full company details: address, phone number
- name and surname of the contact person
- a list of companies whose packaging will be sent to Germany; if the packaging is without logos and without any information, enter the name of your company
2. In addition to registering with LUCID, you need to purchase a license for shipping packaging to Germany and its storage/recycling.
This is done through a company that deals with waste management. The list of companies is here:
https://www.verpackungsregister.org/stiftung-behoerde/katalog-systembeteiligungspflicht/
Reclay offers a good deal for small sellers: https://www.reclay-group.com/de/de/
This company has very good rates for small quantities, lower than the competition, because you can declare very small amounts, e.g., 30kg of packaging per year. Elsewhere it’s more expensive because there’s usually a minimum declared amount, e.g., the minimum declared amount is 100kg, and even if you send 30kg, you pay as for 100kg. However, for significant quantities, e.g., 1000kg of cardboard packaging, it’s worth checking offers from other companies.
On this page: https://activate.reclay.de/verpackungs-lizenzierung/ there’s a calculator where you can calculate the annual fee. At Reclay, you can purchase a license online and pay by card. There’s no service in Polish (as of the publication date of this article).
3. Licensing applies to product packaging (even just the film), packaging in which products are shipped, fillers like bubble wrap, labels stuck on the package, etc. License costs vary depending on the quantity and type of waste.
